The programs listed below are divided into two general groups: stallion service auctions and stallion stakes. Since many successful reined cow horses share the bloodlines of champion cutting and reining horses, programs from associations like the NCHA and NRHA have been included. To see several cow horse sires who are enrolled in incentive programs, visit the Stallions page.
Stallion service auctions offer donated breedings at auction via sealed bid, to be opened on a set date. The unsold breedings are then offered at half price or so to the public. An auction is for the breeding only; any other expenses such as chute and vet fees are the responsiblity of the mare owner. Sometimes these programs have later benefits such as the resulting foal or all get being eligible to compete at specific aged events. The auction may serve as a fundraising event and stallion owners typically can (and do) donate more than one breeding. Below is an overview of several stallion service auctions relevant to the cow horse industry:
|
NRCHA Stallion Service Auction: bidders may submit sealed bids (including signed check for fee) via mail for this silent auction in mid-November. Names and amounts are kept confidential and there is no minimum bid. Bidders may submit a first, second and third choice in the event that they do not win their first few choices. Successful bidders are responsible for any chute, vet, shipped semen or other fees - the auction is for the breeding only. Visit the NRCHA site for more information and participating stallions or call the office at 580.759.4949.
Great Lakes RCHA Stallion Auction: For the 2008 breeding season, all 2009 foals by a stallion stakes sire will be eligible for 2012 futurity. The foal that is the result from the auction sale will have no fees (Entry, Cattle, or Judges). All other foals will have to pay an entry fee which is 10% of the added money, and applicable cattle and judges fees. The auction money is spent as follows: 50% GLRCHA (Trophy’s and Advertisement from this money), 50% Added Money: 35% to Open Futurity, 15% to Non Pro Futurity. Stallion owner donates stud fee only. Mare owner pays mare care, vet fees, shipping of semen, chute fees, etc. For more info, visit www.glrcha.com.
NYCHA Stallion Service Auction: 100% of the successful bids in this auction benefit the National Youth Cutting Horse Association and the list of participating stallions is usually a who's who of the cutting horse world. Bids are opened in February, with unsold breedings then available on a first-come, first-served basis at 60% of the advertised stud fee. The breeding purchased is not transferable and you do not need to be an NCHA member to participate. You can learn more about this program on the NCHA site or by contacting Danette McGuire at 817.244.6188 x 125 or at youth@nchacutting.com.
WSCHA Stallion Auction: this program is a fundraiser for the Western States Cutting Horse Association, an NCHA affiliate. Stallion owners donate a breeding, minus the chute fee, mare care and vet bills which remain the responsibility of the winning bidder. All bidding starts at 50% of the advertised stud fee. You can view the stallions and bid online at www.CuttingNews.com. You can also call Meredith Lyons at 303.637.0793 or Ron Pietrafeso at 303.660.9595 for more information on this program.
CSU Cutting Stallion Service Auction: another popular cutting stallion auction, this program supports equine orthopedic research at Colorado State University. A minimum bid for each breeding is posted on the web site and the auction usually runs for about a week in January through sealed bid. Click here or email kruggle@colostate.edu for more information.
NRHA Sire & Dam Program: this program is not an actual auction but it is an opportunity for mare owners to purchase a listed breeding at half price on a first-come, first-served basis. Mare owners must watch the NRHA web site or call in often to check on the availability of a breeding. Stallion owners may donate more than one breeding. The resulting Sire & Dam foal is then eligible to compete at the NRHA Futurity and Derby for reduced entry fees. This program also pays out well in Sire awards - the 2003 NRHA Futurity Sire Awards purse exceeded $46,000! Whether or not you show NRHA, the reduced breeding fee and the value of your colt as a Sire & Dam foal make this program worth looking at. Visit the NRHA site or call Michelle Wrigley at 405.946.7400 x 116 for the details.
Southwest RCHA Stallion Auction: A silent auction is held at the NRCHA World Show/SRCHA Derby, with many great cowhorse sires available for less than the advertised stud fee. For more info, call Matthew Bell at 432-687-2555 or visit www.srcha.org.
RMRHA Stallion Stakes & Auction: combining a sealed bid auction and a stallion stakes, this program continues to grow with payouts and sire awards at the 2007 RMRHA Summer Slide Futurity to exceed $35,000 for foals of 2004. Bids are opened March 1st with unsold breedings then available at half price on a first-come, first-served basis. All of the stallion's get born in the donated year are eligible to run for Summer Slide Stallion Stakes Futurity and Derby money. Each donation results in a free, transferable entry for the stallion owner provided he also owned the mare at the time of breeding. Whether or not you plan to show the foal in reining, this is a great opportunity to receive a breeding at less than advertised price and produce a foal with increased value. Complete details are available at the RMRHA web site or by calling Lance Shockley at 970.667.0676.

Stallion stakes programs promote the showing of a sire's offspring; stallion stakes-eligible horses appeal to buyers who are looking to compete for added money at special limited aged events open exclusively to get of subscribed/nominated stallions. Stakes typically require the stallion owner (or sometimes another interested party) to participate with their stallion by paying a fee for each year they are in the program... some only require the stallion to participate in the year his get will be showing. A few stakes are regional in nature, designed to promote local breeding programs; enrolled stallions are required to stand or reside within a certain area. As each stallion stakes show event grows, so does the demand for eligible horses. If you're a breeder, it's well worth looking into the programs below:
|
NRCHA Subscribed Stallion Program: 4 and 5 year old offspring of subscribed stallions are eligible to compete in the NRCHA Stakes. There is a $1,000 nomination fee per year to subscribe, payable by January 31st of the year that get will be competing. The Stallion Stakes Open and Non Pro added purse consists of the total nomination fees, minus 15% for administrative expenses and 5% for a stallion nominator award. Visit NRCHA.com for details or call the office at 580.759.4949.
Great Lakes RCHA Stallion Auction: For the 2008 breeding season, all 2009 foals by a stallion stakes sire will be eligible for 2012 futurity. If the program generates 20 nominations and 8 entries in a Stakes class, the guaranteed payout is $10,000. For more information, visit the SRCHA web site or call Robert Chown at 940.668.6838.
Sandhills RCHA Stallion Stakes: with Sire Awards and a payout of almost $12,000 at the Nebraska Futurity & Derby in 2003, this program offers a great opportunity for a limited number of stallions from Nebraska or surrounding states. A $500 nomination fee per year allows offspring to compete as 3, 4, 5, and 6 year olds. If 30 or more stallions are in the program, it's a guaranteed $10,000 Stallion Stakes Open Futurity purse. The stallion owner is even awarded 1 free, non-transferable entry for any Stakes class. Call J.B. Atkins at 308.872.6970 or visit the Sandhills RCHA site for details.
